My reporting career started at the University of Minnesota School of Journalism and Mass Communication, and led me to television stations in Nebraska, Oregon, and Michigan from 2007 - 2014. I shot, wrote, and edited daily news reports, as well as longer-format stories. My work as a video journalist was recognized in 2015 with a Michigan Emmy® Award.
I had no intention of leaving the world of daily deadlines, but a seizure ended my career and opened the door for a new one in 2015. That’s when I learned I was a candidate for brain surgery to cure my epilepsy. As a journalist, documenting this experience was a natural decision. I directed, co-produced and edited Brainstorm, which premiered on Twin Cities PBS in November 2016, and starting airing on select public television stations nationwide in November 2017. Brainstorm is a 2017 Upper Midwest Emmy Nominee, an Impact DOCS award-winner, and a Docs Without Borders Film Festival official selection.
